September 1901 when the Government were considering the
question of reclamation for development purposes of the Lots
in question from which it will be observed the Government
itself then proposed the appointment of Assessors. The Amend-
ment to this effect proposed when the Amending Ordinance was
before the Legislative Council was defeated in Council by
the Official vote only. We are unable to understand this
official opposition in view of the fact that there is a
competent Valuer and Assessor in the Colony Mr.Shelton Hooper
not now a Government official but formerly holding the appoint-
ment of Government Assessor under the Rating Ordinance who

is usually retained by the Government in compensation cases and
whose services are often availed of by the Government and who
has actually been retained by the Government in this matter.

We would further add that our clients are now forward-
ing to the Government their claims in respect of front sections
amounting to the sum of $161,217.00. Where such sections run
right through the claime for the back portions are not being
now forwarded, notwithstanding that they are covered by the
Ordinance, pending a reply to this letter and with the object
of keeping the position of matters as simple as possible.
